In 2000, twelve parishioners from St. Josephine Bakhita Parish (then St. Elizabeth Seton) traveled to Haiti to respond to the U.S. Catholic Bishop's call to "reach beyond our borders."
Working with the Dioceses of Norwich, the community established a twinning relatonship with our sisters and brother at St Anne Parish in Saintard.
Over the years our connecton has included mutual prayer support, immersion trips to visit Saintard and visits to Connecticut by St. Anne's pastors.
We pledged monthly financial support for the Haitian parish and school and, thanks to a generous bequest, we were able to help complete construction on the St. Anne parish school.
That building now serves more than 500 K12 students. In 2017 we helped rebuild the community's fishing boats lost during a hurricane. Many hands have made our journey bright.
Fundraisers have included Hoof it for Haiti, a 5K Run/Walk, concerts, faith formatgion classes collectng school supplies, vacaton bible school and parish sewing groups donatng handmade items.
In July, we mark St. Anne's feast day with a special collecton.
The community of St. Josephine Bakhita parish began twinning with the parish of Saint Anne in Saintard, Haiti in March, 2001.
Saint Anne Church, established in 1958, is a parish of over 3000 people, located on the coast just north of Port-au-Prince.
The church is in a beautiful area adjacent to banana and plantain groves.
Our commitment of $1000 a month is primarily used to buy food for the house,
maintenance and upkeep to the church and parish car and to pay employees of the church and rectory.
There still is an overwhelming need to raise money in order to construct, supply and support a school for the community.
